Richmond update: The Wild Wild West…

Het mag duidelijk zijn dat het organiseren van de Olympische Spelen in Vancouver veel organisatie vergt. Zo ook voor het schaatsteam. De meeste schaatsers en coaches hebben de laatste tijd doorgebracht in Calgary. De Olympic Oval bood goed omstandigheden om te trainen aangezien de baan in Richmond gesloten was voor de preparatie van het ijs.

Vervolgens moet al het materiaal van Calgary naar Vancouver getransporteerd worden. Een tocht van ca 1000 km door bare omstandigheden. Het Canadese team maakt hiervoor gebruik van de diensten van Leo Volkering (ook wel bekend als Jan Klaassen). Tijdens de tocht heeft hij enkele foto’s gemaakt om een beeld te geven van de tocht. Yesterday I flew from Vancouver to Calgary, Alberta. With a Budget rent-a-truck I picked up some materials at the Calgary Olympic Oval and drove 275 km to Golden, B.C. Today I drove from Golden, B.C. to Richmond, B.C. , 713 km. Right in front of me I did see a Jeep SUV spinning out of control ending up in the ditch, after it was overtaken by a big truck traveling way over the speed limit, creating a wave of slush with no visibility for other drivers. The Budget’s truck windshield is damaged, due to flying pebbles mixed in with the sand…

Pictures from today, Friday, January 15, 2010 on the Trans-”O Canada” Highway:

9:45 AM, In the Rocky Mountains, from Golden, B.C. climbing towards Glacier National Park, Roger Pass, 1330 m. Snow becomes ice.

With the freezing temperature it becomes one shiny sheet of ice... By now, I am driving at a snail's pace going uphill.

Hundreds of trucks traveling eastbound ended up having to wait the whole day on Highway 1, due to snow avalanche control.

At 2 PM, after a lunch break/fuel stop in dry and sunny Kamloops, B.C. , 345 m.

4 PM in the Coastal Mountains, Coquihalla Summit, 1244 m
